The Difference Between Success, Opportunity, and Tragedy

By: Keefer Fine Art

There’s a quote I came across recently that stopped me in my tracks:

“The difference between success, opportunity, and tragedy is your perspective.”

At first glance, it felt simple. But the more I sat with it, the more it unraveled something deep in me ... like tugging at a loose thread and realizing it’s connected to the whole fabric.

We’ve all had those moments when life doesn’t go as planned.
A job falls through.
A launch flops.
A trip you’ve been counting down to gets canceled.

And in those moments, it’s so easy to assign a label ... failure, setback, disappointment.

But what if the only real difference between a moment that breaks you and one that builds you… is how you see it?

Perspective is everything. It’s the lens through which we view our circumstances, our worth, our growth.

Success isn’t always loud. Sometimes it looks like showing up again after a hard day.
Opportunity often hides in inconvenience—a detour that, as frustrating as it is, leads to something better.
And tragedy, while painful and real, can also stretch us, soften us, and invite us to grow… if we let it.

When Jerry is standing behind the camera, we’re always aware of how a small shift in perspective changes everything.
Move an inch to the left… and suddenly the light dances.
Tilt upward… and what felt ordinary becomes extraordinary.

The same is true in life.

I’ve lived moments I thought were setbacks ... only to realize later they were setups for something more aligned, more meaningful, more me.
Just like when we’re on the road and the scenic route (aka, the “wrong turn”) ends up being the most memorable part of the trip.

It’s not about pretending the hard stuff isn’t hard.
It’s about giving ourselves permission to zoom out.
To pause.
To wonder: What else could this moment mean?

So if you’re feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or like life handed you the wrong script… maybe it’s time to adjust the lens.

Ask yourself:

  • What success might already be present?

  • What opportunity is hidden in the mess?

  • What story do I want to tell when I look back on this moment?

You are not powerless. You are the storyteller of your life.
And every moment—yes, even the hard ones—can be part of your transformation.

Because just like art…
The beauty isn’t always in the subject.
It’s in how we choose to see it.
